Protect Diversity #SundaySalon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
Variable. Hot days. Cool days and nights. Rain. Sunshine. We’re expecting a warm but rainy Easter.
What are you reading?
Our book group had a terrific discussion of The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration by Jake Bittle. It’s one of those books with a depressing but desperately important topic. Fortunately, it’s so well-written that it’s a pleasure from the reading perspective which is a balance for the heavy material. Plus, we all learned a lot!
To celebrate the Bard’s birthday, I shared thoughts and quotes from the delightful book, Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench.
I’m still listening to John Green’s Everything is Tuberculosis.
I started The London House by Katherine Reay which is proving to be a good distraction.
What are you watching?
I’m watching Designated Survivor on Netflix. That feels like the last show that should be working for me, right now. It’s weirdly cathartic to watch a fictional show about a time of chaotic government.
To balance that, somewhat, we’re watching Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+. Although, there are elements that have echoes in the current climate. This show is about a time after Picard resigned from Starfleet because the Federation wasn’t acting up to its own principles.
What are you doing?
Instead of attending one of the bigger events for April 19, I decided that my usual Black Lives Matter vigil counted as part of the resistance movement — especially since we followed it with a strategizing meeting about how to support our schools’ programs for diversity, equity, and inclusion at a time when they are under attack by the government.
I continued the A to Z Challenge with more posts on my theme of Activism:
- L is for Lobbying
- M is for Meetings
- N is for Nerdfighteria
- O is for Op Eds and Letters to the Editor and Public Statements
- P is for Phone Calls
- Q is for Queer
Happy Easter to anyone who is observing the holiday! I hope the weather is better for your spring celebrations than it is here.
How are you this fine Sunday?
THe Great DIsplacement sounds very interesting.
Everything is Tuberculosis…such a great title.
I’ve considered reading The Great Migration. I honestly don’t know if I can face it. Thank you for your activism!
The Great Migration sounds very interesting. Something has got to change. Thanks for sharing, and the great A to Z posts
I’m adding The Great Displacement to my list to read. My naturalist group might enjoy that one, too. Thank you for sharing it.
And thank you for your A-Z posts. I will catch up!
Happy Easter, we did not do much to celebrate this year. I am basically just resting and relaxing today, which is much needed.
I’m so glad your group read and discussed The Great Displacement. It’s hard to say it was my ‘favorite’ nonfiction of the year, but it was certainly the most important and informative!
I bought a signed copy of Everything is Tuberculosis when I was in Canada the last week of March. I hope you’re enjoying it.
I’ll check out The Great Displacement.
I watched Designated Survivor when it originally aired on network TV. I’m a huge fan of Kiefer Sutherland so I couldn’t miss it. It was good but a scary topic. I, also, watched Picard when it first came out. That was a good one too.
Hope you have a great week!
I just finished and reviewed Everything is Tuberculosis. Wow. Talk about a depressing topic. Adding the Displacement book to my TBR.
The family is coming over for Easter festivities. It is raining now, though. Bummer. No hunting eggs outside.
Happy Easter.
Warm and partly sunny here today. Rain starting tomorrow and thunderstorms Tuesday. Applied for our passports yesterday. Zoomed church this morning.
You sound busy Joy — fighting the good fight and resisting. Though the Netflix show sounds like a little too close to reality, lol. Enjoy your reads.
The Great Displacement sounds intense and important. This is something I think of often as a diversified farmer who is never not paying attention to the weather, the cycles and oddities, and the climate in general. We’ve observed so many changes in our micro-climate in such a short period of time, it’s pretty concerning. Anyhow, thank you, I’ve added it to my TBR.
Hope your weekend is rounding out nicely and the week ahead is lovely! See you in the A to Z!
We’ve been having up and down weather here. Sort of cooler for this time of year I think. We’ve had a late snow and so a late spring. My daughter said Designated Survivor is really good. I’ll have to check it out! Happy to hear you’re trying to champion rights!
We enjoyed the Picard series when we watched it a while ago!
Hope you have a great week.
