Hands Off! #Sunday Salon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
So much rain. We expect some major flooding on one of our larger tributaries to the Mississippi River. Fortunately, it looks like the crest will happen on Sunday, which will reduce the impact on traffic flow.
What are you reading?
I’m reading our next book club selection. Our book club specializes in books about race in America. At first glance, a book called The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration might not look like a book about race. But if you know anything beyond the white-washed history that many of us were taught in school, you’ll know which communities get levees and which ones get bought out and destroyed.
What are you watching?
We started Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light on PBS. It’s the second season, based on Hilary Mantel’s books. We’re learning about the later years of Thomas Cromwell’s life after Anne Boleyn was beheaded.
What are you doing?
I went to my usual Black Lives Matter vigil this morning and then stopped by one of several large Hands Off! protests in our region. The protest was from 11am to 2pm, which is a long time to stand in the rain.
Apparently, there were over 1500 people lined along Manchester Road, one of the main thoroughfares in St. Louis County. I saw photos and video that make me believe that number. By the time I got there, it had dwindled to a few hundred hardy souls. I felt like I was part of the relief crew. We kept it going until the official end time.
Did you protest today?
Speaking of activism, that’s my theme for this year’s A to Z Challenge. Here are the first handful of posts:
Too bad you had rain. Our weather was not beautiful, but at least it was dry. I just posted photos of the two protests that I attended here.
best…mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I didn’t.
Thanks for protesting. My protest is on my blog, showing another friend out protesting in our rain today, here: https://bonniesbooks.blogspot.com/2025/04/protesting-in-2025-and-marching-in-1918.html
I didn’t know Black Lives Matter still has protests going on. Great to hear, especially these days.
I’m so glad that you protested. I am trying to do whatever I can here—writing email, phone calls, and putting my fifty cents into local pockets.
I need to take a look at your A-Z posts on activism, I think.
You are so committed to speaking out and I really admire that. I learn much from your posts, not just the fun BriFri ones
You reminded me that I wanted to watch Wolf Hall!
I hope that you did not have flooding! I heard the rain has been crazy down south. We have had a ton of rain here as well. I didn’t protest but I have been trying to do some other things.
Here in Maryland, we’re in a drought. Thankfully, we seem to be in a pattern now where we have several chances for rain. Have a great week.
I thought The Great Displacement was just fascinating… and surprised (but not really) by how much it really was about race!
We have had a lot of rain as well, but no flooding in my immediate area, thankfully. Have a great week!
Good for you to take part in the protests Joy. I always believe in standing up to my beliefs as well.
Yes, we attend a Hands Off Rally yesterday. But it looks like we had much better weather than you did. I am just happy that every single state pulled off several rallies. Good for both of us.
