How’s the weather?
Our weather made the news. That’s never good.
Personally, we did fine on Friday night. We get some water in the basement with an intense rain, and we got more than normal. Water flowed in weird ways so I’m going to want to do some clean-up of our front sidewalk.
We had a rough fifteen minutes of a downpour with a lot of loud hail and big winds. But the tornadic cells went north or south.
The hardest part of the experience, personally, was the late night. It was a couple of hours past our bedtime before the tornado sirens stopped and the weather people switched to reporting problems on the east side of the Mississippi as the storm moved away from us.
We’re grateful to our local meteorologists who kept us informed and they were grateful to the National Weather Service that is currently under siege by the Trump administration. Check out the statement from the American Meteorological Society. The National Weather Service keeps us safe on nights like last night.
We woke up today to lots of damage in Missouri — loss of lives and homes and businesses. Thanks to our first responders who fought wind-driven fires that burned multiple homes before the storm even arrived and then, were kept busy most of the night attending other emergencies.
What are you reading?
I’m still making my way through Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench and the audiobook version of James by Percival Everett.
I’m feeling a bit behind on my reading, though. Our book group is discussing The Guncle by Steven Rowley on Thursday. I’m told that it’s fun and fast, so I’m hoping to get it done on time.
What are you watching?
I enjoyed The Jetty and the final season of Vera on BritBox. I’m hoping to get reviews of both of those written in the next couple of weeks.
What are you doing?
I went to two events to support educational equity in my school district.
The first was a forum for candidates that are running for our school board. We asked pointed questions about diversity, equity, and inclusion and about addressing disparities in discipline that negatively impact students of color and students with disabilities.
The second was a meeting of citizens, school staff, and parents to talk about the current challenges to equity work and how we can continue to support every student in our district to achieve their potential.
It’s hard to say which of the government shut-downs is the most shocking, but depriving the entire country of weather information seems outlandishly ridiculous. It’s so critical and helpful, as your story points out. Could anyone really want to return to the situation where tornados show up completely out of the blue! (Don’t answer that.)
Good luck to us all… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I’m so glad the tornadoes didn’t get you! My friends back in Arkansas said all our little towns were hit hard. Luckily, no lives lost.
Glad you were safe! When I lived in Ohio we had to deal with tornados. I moved from Ohio to Florida and have to deal with hurricanes and tornados from time to time.
All this time, for some reason, I thought you lived in Portland, Oregon. When I started reading about the tornado I wondered why I hadn’t heard of it. A tornado in Oregon would be very newsworthy. Then instead of the Columbia River you mentioned the Mississippi and I had to do a big adjustment. Still a tornado in March! Ugh what is happening to our world?
I’m sorry your weather was in the news. Tornadoes are very scary to me. I would think they would be especially scary at night.
Good luck with a fast read of the Guncle. I am curious about the audio version of James. I’m supposed to lead a discussion about James this summer.
I was thinking of you the night the storms blew through your area and am glad you’re okay… such a scary situation!
The Guncle is a very fast, enjoyable read. It’s especially good on uadio if you have that available. Good luck finishing on time!
Glad the tornadoes didn’t hit there. It’s dumb they are cutting the weather service and everything else. No real sense. Have fun at your book club.
