Cinderella is 75! #SundaySalon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
When I woke up on Wednesday, the weather prediction was for five inches of snow, half of it falling between 9am and 10am. As it turned out, we didn’t get snow until 10:30am and the total for the day was less than an inch. It was melting off our driveway while it was still falling.
I had prepared by going to the grocery store during the Super Bowl on Sunday when I knew it would be empty rather than waiting until Monday or Tuesday when I knew it would be crowded with people stocking up on bread and milk. Oh well, we have a lot of food in the house to enjoy.
There were a couple of bursts of pretty snowfall. I took a walk during the second one to enjoy the real-life greeting card picture.
What are you reading?
I have three books going at once. Two books became available at the library, and I couldn’t resist. The third is the book that I want to finish by Thursday evening for our book club meeting.
Audiobook. I listened to the first two installments of The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros, so I wanted to hear Onyx Storm as well. This proved to be a bit of a challenge since it’s 24 hours long and the library gives me 21 days to complete it. That was relatively easy during the nice autumn weather when I walked for 45 minutes most days. Now, I’m having to come up with more times and places to listen to an audiobook.
E-book. I lucked into a skip-the-line copy of the latest J.D. Robb book, Bonded in Death. The print version is 400 pages, so this is pretty long, too. Fortunately, I devour these books like potato chips (except that I don’t eat potato chips because they go down to easily).
Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom by Ilyon Woo is nonfiction that reads like a novel. The first couple of times that I heard about this story, I thought that it was a novel. The adventure story is even more exciting to know that it really happened.
What are you watching?
We’re watching Dopesick on Hulu. It tells the story about how the opioid addiction happened with the marketing of Oxycontin in rural parts of the United States. If you want to know why Americans in small towns are so angry, this is part of the answer. Michael Keaton definitely deserved his Emmy for this performance of a simple doctor who ended up in a complicated situation that harmed himself and, worse, the patients he genuinely cared for.
What are you doing?
I’m celebrating the 75th anniversary of Disney’s Cinderella, released on February 15, 1950. I rewatched the film, expecting that it might be a good choice for Valentine’s Day considering it’s happily-ever-after ending. But it’s not much of a romance since the prince barely says two words. We only know him through the decidedly negative opinion of his father the king. Hopefully, he has more going for him than the handsome face and graceful dance moves.
Cinderella is more of a coming-of-age story, where Cinderella and her animal friends overcome the challenge of a dictatorial head of the house who overplays her hand and loses the game to the earnest, compassionate, and determined Cinderella. A lesson for our times.
How are you this fine Sunday?
I like your literary analysis of Cinderella — I saw the Disney movie but never tried to see it as anything but a fairy tale..
PS — I really admire you for trying to find a way to have your voice heard in the current debacle.
I’d love to see the original version of Cinderella. I wish you the best of luck in getting your voice heard.
Dopesick was really good.
We have all the snow here, I think. And it is still snowing! We plan on staying put and staying warm today. Have a great week.
The snow sounds lovely. I think I would have enjoyed our snow more if I had had the proper clothing.
Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom sounds like a book I would like to read.
Cinderella is 75 years old? Wow, didn’t realize it had been arouhd that long. Nice analysis of the plot, I enjoyed that.
Currently have 2 books going at the same time.
I did not realize that Cinderella had been around that long! As we get older we forget things like that, LOL! thanks for sharing.
How lovely is that Cinderella poster. It’s a strange tale to be sure. We have the ballet on atm but it’s so expensive, I decided not to go. Looks beautiful tho #SundaySalon
I’m going to watch Cinderella today sometime. I’ve loved the movie since I first watched in when I was very young. Same with The Wizard of Oz.
We need a strong Cinderella for these times. I’m glad you’re reading the Woo book and can let me know how it is. I have a copy but won’t be able to get to it for a couple months. I hope it will make a fascinating book club read.
Happy anniversary to Cinderella!!
Have a great week.
I never saw Cinderella as a child–I am nine years younger and until I was in high school, we didn’t have a TV. So, I didn’t know the magic of Cinderella until my own children became addicted to it. We had a babysitter who confided in me that if she had to sit through Cinderella one more time, she might go insane. She, of course, did sit through many more viewings of this classic, but then insisted the kids watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls games with her!
I do want to read Master Slave Husband Wife, but waiting for the right mood. Glad to hear it reads like a novel.
