Biddy’s Day #Imbolc #BriFri
Welcome to British Isles Friday! British Isles Friday is a weekly event for sharing all things British and Irish — reviews, photos, opinions, trip reports, guides, links, resources, personal stories, interviews, and research posts. Join us each Friday to link your British and Irish themed content and to see what others have to share. The link list is at the bottom of this post. Pour a cup of tea or lift a pint and join our link party!
Last week, I took a fantasy trip to Dumfries, Scotland to celebrate Robert Burns’ birthday. Tina enjoyed James Rebanks’ Instagram account featuring his farm in Cumbria, so she picked up his book, Pastoral Song.
The beginning of February marks the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. In Ireland, this day has been celebrated since ancient times as Imbolc or St. Brigid’s Day depending on the time and place.
The town of Killgorlin in County Kerry calls their celebration Biddy’s Day. They started celebrating a few days ago and will continue through the weekend and beyond. Check out their program of activities:
The Discover Kerry page also has the list, if you prefer to see it without the fancy font.
The main themes seem to be storytelling, craftmaking, and rituals of various kinds. Also, “Live Music in select bars all weekend.”
Here’s some video from last year’s activities. I love that all are welcome.
What a wonderful way to celebrate Irish heritage as a resident or visitor, with a little something for everyone.
Now that’s a festival I could enjoy!
