Floods #SundaySalon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
Two Fridays in a row I ate lunch in a picnic pavilion overlooking the Missouri River. A week ago, everything was completely normal. We saw pleasure and fishing boats going in and out the River, safely and easily.
Now, the boat ramp is covered with water. The large parking lot where vehicles and trailers park for boat access is covered with water. The entrance to another parking lot is covered with water.
We watched trees rushing down the River.
The Mississippi River is flooding, too. I know because there’s a call for volunteers to build sandbag walls near where I grew up in a small Mississippi River town.
What are you reading?
If you were intrigued by Patrick Stewart’s memoir that I mentioned last week, I posted a full review on Friday: Making It So.
What are you watching?
Today, I’m watching the all-day live stream from the Physics Girl channel. Dianna used to create cool science videos on YouTube. Then, she got Long COVID and its shocking what that has meant for her and her life. Today’s live stream raises money for research and for training doctors so that more patients can get more help. Part of the purpose is to raise awareness and I’m learning so much!
What are you doing?
My novel manuscript went over 90,000 words a few days ago. I expect to write ‘The End’ on Monday or Tuesday. Woohoo! After completing my first draft, I’ll take a month away from it before re-engaging for the long editing process.
How are you this fine Sunday?
I have vivid childhood memories of going to see the floods or aftermath of floods on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers when I was a child growing up in St. Louis, including on the riverfront in downtown. I wonder if there has been real change in all the years, or if there are just some flood years.
Have a good week… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
My dad grew up near the Mississippi River, and flooding was an expected occasional threat when he was a boy, much like hurricanes are to us here along the Texas Gulf Coast.
I am so impressed that you have written over 90,000 words and you are nearing the end. Congratulations, Joy! You should be very proud of yourself.
I just subscribed to The Physics Girl. Her channel looks interesting! That is awful to hear about her experience with COVID. I am still someone who is very wary of it.
It’s always crazy to me to see areas get covered by water like that. We live near the Detroit River and there are years where it comes up higher and it is crazy.
Fantastic you have so much done on your manuscript! That’s dedication.
I read about the floods but had no idea you were near that area. That is crazy to see trees floating donw the river!
That must’ve been something, comparing one Friday picnic at the river to the next!
I did jump over and read your full review on Patrick Stewart’s book and it is definitely on my TBR! I scrolled through his IMDB entry and the only things I’ve ever seen him in is North & South and that one episode of Frasier.
This is going to sound funny. For some reason, I thought you were British. I don’t know why. I just did.
We’re having some flooding where I am as well. We don’t have a river like the Mississippi or Missouri, though, to contend with. I hope the sandbags do their job.
Have a great week!

I run a weekly link party called British Isles Friday — but it’s because I enjoy British media as an outsider. An easy mistake to make!
Oh no both rivers are flooding? How awful. Too much rain or what? Congrats on nearing the end to your writing. That’s terrific! Way to go. Keep it going.
