Sunday Salon for 14 January 2024
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
So cold. The predicted low for tonight is -6°. There are many winters when St. Louis doesn’t get as low as 0°, much less below that. I stocked up with groceries last week and don’t intend to leave the house again until it’s above freezing.
What are you reading?
I complained last week that I wasn’t sure about continuing with Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus due to the distanced narration. I stuck with it long enough to get enthralled. That’s not quite the same as liking it, but close enough to call it an engaging read and be glad that I’ve joined the throngs who read it. The ending was satisfying.
I’m listening to The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. It almost has the opposite problem. The story sucks you right into the main character’s life, but it’s such a dismal life that I started plotting an escape. I stuck with it, mostly because it’s read by Carey Mulligan, who I adore (Far from the Madding Crowd, Suffragette, Collateral, The Dig, and My Grandparents’ War). All was forgiven once we reached the Midnight Library.
What are you watching?
As part of Jane Austen January, I watched Pride and Prejudice (2005) with Keira Knightley. Since last week’s post on filming locations worked well, I did it again for this week’s British Isles Friday post.
What are you doing?
My week was one of continuously worsening cold symptoms. For the first couple of days, it was just a sore throat. And then, I started sounding like a frog. And then, the sneezing and runny nose got going. Today, the sixth day since I noticed a symptom, I experience fatigue pretty much any time that I move. I’m happy that I continue to have enough energy to work at my desk — otherwise, I would be very bored.
How are you this fine Sunday?
I’m sorry to hear you’re sick, and that freezing weather doesn’t help a bit! It’s -3° here in the Kansas City area, and the Chiefs game is starting soon. I can’t imagine being there in these temps. Hope you’re feeling better soon. Reading and resting is best!
Oh my! Now that’s cold weather! I guess I should stop complaining about our expected low of 24!
I’m so sorry that you are feeling sick. A new terrible symptom appearing each day—that’s awful.
Glad you were able to stick with Lessons in Chemistry and Midnight Library and ended up liking them both.
I hope you soon start to improve and get over your cold.
best, mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Oof, hope you feel better soon! That kind of illness can be so miserable. Hope you can still curl up and enjoy reading!
I hope you feel better soon. I’m glad you ended up enjoying Lessons in Chemistry. I keep avoiding the Midnight Library because it feels like it would just be so sad.
How awful to be stuck inside in this weather and have a cold as well.Hopefully you’ll feel better soon. Wish I could share my soup witn you as it would be comforting on your throat.
I very much liked the Midnight Library. Doug and I were talking about the premise and how every l;ittle decision can take yu down a different path in life.
Sorry to hear that you are sick! Now that it seems to be full blown, hopefully you will get over it quickly. It is 10 here in Cleveland, with wind chills -20. We opted for online church this morning instead of braving the cold. I hope you have a great rest of the day and have lots of great books to keep you company!
-6 C here or 21 F so not as cold as you!!
THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY was my favorite read of 2022. I love that book so much! Sorry it was so hard to get into LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY. I’m glad you found your stride. I have it on hold at my library but I’m still 22 weeks away from my turn. *rolls eyes*

Oh no!! I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well! I was a little under the weather over the weekend as well, but I had pulled some muscles and was in pain. I am better today though thank goodness. I will be checking out your post today! I was waiting again until I rewatched the movie.
I am so happy you are joining us!!
I hope you feel better soon. Stay warm and take care of yourself
Wishing you a great reading week
