Sunday Salon for 10 December 2023
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
We had a couple of unseasonably warm days this week. That made for some nice walks!
What are you reading?
I started and finished Inheritance by Nora Roberts. Roberts has been hit-or-miss for me in recent years, but this one worked. Well, right up until it ended in a cliff-hanger. That’s a downside to reading the first book in a trilogy right after it comes out.
Inheritance is a ghost story, but most of the ghosts are friendly. I want my own housekeeper ghost — leave the dishes and they’re cleaned and put away by the time you walk into the kitchen next.
What are you watching?
I’ve managed to watch a handful of Hallmark Christmas movies. So far, my favorite was A Biltmore Christmas. I enjoyed the time travel to the Golden Age of cinema. But what really did it for me was the familiarity of Christmas at Biltmore. I haven’t been there in person, but it was one of my fantasy destinations for Christmas last year.
If Hallmark is looking for some other locations to set Christmas films, here are some of my favorite places to imagine:
- Mohonk Mountain House in the Hudson Valley region of New York state
- Jekyll Island in Georgia
- Big Cedar Lodge in the Missouri Ozarks
What are you writing?
I took the week off my novel to deal with my tooth extraction, but I wrote more than the usual number of blog posts.
Inspired by our book club’s choice of A Fever in the Heartland, I researched my family history of involvement with the Ku Klux Klan and wrote up what I learned, so far. Then, I reviewed the book.
For British Isles Friday, I observed the 200th anniversary of the day that Mary Anning discovered the plesiosaurus by reviewing Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. The anniversary is today. Three cheers for Mary Anning!
What are you doing?
My tooth extraction was easy. The doctor said that he normally tells patients that the extraction is the hard part. In my case, the implant might be the hard part because my extraction was so smooth. The expectation is that my recovery will also be easier, with less swelling and bruising than happens when the tissues are traumatized by the extraction.
I had almost no pain during or after. I’m diligent about icing and hygiene to keep it that way.
How are you this fine Sunday?
