Sunday Salon for 13 August 2023
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
I have no idea. I’ve barely stepped out. I think we missed a lot of excellent walking days, but I don’t want to think about that too much.
What are you reading?
Montana Sky by Nora Roberts on my phone. I wanted something compulsively readable to get me through the end of my COVID isolation.
How Much of These Hills is Gold by C. Pam Zhang in print. Our August book club selection.
The Heroine’s Journey by Gail Carriger as audio. I learned from my novel-writing class that one of my favorite steampunk authors (Parasol Protectorate series, Finishing School series) wrote a nonfiction book about writing, on one of my favorite topics. Audio is not my favorite way to consume this sort of information, but it was the only option available at the library. I’ll probably buy a print copy to add to my large collection of writing books.
What are you watching?
The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. I know that I’m late to this one. I think I tried it once but it didn’t work for me at that time. This time, I’m hooked! It’s a weird sci-fi story of superheroes inspired by a comic book series. I’m only in the second episode of the first of three 10-episode seasons. A fourth season has been announced, but no release date. The intenet’s best guess seems to be early in 2024, so I’ll probably still remember what happened in the first three seasons. That’s an advantage of arriving late to a show.
What are you doing?
Taking baby steps out into the world. Thursday was my Day 11, the day that the CDC declared me to be safe to go out in the world without a mask. I tested that morning, and I was negative for COVID — yay! Since my COVID symptoms completely overlapped my normal August high-mold-count symptoms, I wore a mask on my first errand (to the library) and my second errand (to get groceries).
What are you writing?
I think I made some real progress this week on figuring out my plot. I’ve been working on this novel for three years. The first half comes easy to me, but I get bogged down in the second half. I may be starting to solve some of the problems that were causing that. That feels like a big step forward.
My review of Ultra-Processed People was an unusual topic for British Isles Friday that also worked well for Weekend Cooking and Foodies Read.
How are you this fine Sunday?
Good that you are getting over your bout of covid!
Glad you are starting to get better and able to get out and about. Two necessary places: books and groceries, love it. Have a great week!
There are a lot of good things happening in your world right now—you have successfully gotten over Covid, you’ve resumed going out in the world, and your plot is taking shape. Wonderful.
I borrowed How Much of These Hills is Gold from the library as research for my treasure-hunting children’s novel, but I didn’t get time to read it. I will check it out again next week.
Glad you’re feeling better!
I plan to check out Ultra-Processed People, it sounds interesting.
Glad you’re feeling better and getting out into the world again! You must be feeling pretty happy about progress on your book – hope it continues to go well.

Glad you are feeling better!
Glad you are feeling better and are back out in the world!
I love The Umbrella Academy! I think we are a season behind though.
Good to hear you are working on your book and you are making progress on getting out again. Don’t rush it as your body needs healing time!
Thaks for your very nice comment. xx
I’m glad you’re feeling better and starting to venture out again! Hope you have a good week.
I haven’t gotten outside this week as much as I would have liked. I was hoping to start my early morning walks before work this next week, but I pulled something in my foot and may have to put it off a bit longer.
I enjoyed The Umbrella Academy too. My husband came into it when I was later in the series and now wants to go back and watch the first season.
I hope you are feeling completely better soon.
Have a great week and happy reading, Joy!
I’m glad you are feeling better and able to get back outside! Good luck with your novel writing.
I love Gail Carriger and have been wanting to read Heroine’s Journey for a while now.
I still need to see the latest season of the Umbrella Academy! I forget sometimes and then they go off the radar. It’s a great series.
