British Isle Friday — Armchair BEA Edition
Welcome to British Isles Friday! British Isles Friday is a weekly event for sharing all things British — reviews, photos, opinions, trip reports, guides, links, resources, personal stories, interviews, and research posts. Join us each Friday to link your British-themed content and to see what others have to share. The link list is at the bottom of this post.
We had a terrific turn-out and discussion last week. Did you see that Suey of It’s All About Books made us a collage of British actors? Can you name them all? I got about half.
Book Expo America is this week in New York City. Those of us who didn’t make the trip are enjoying Armchair BEA. We’ve had assigned topics all week, but today we get to choose a topic of our own, so I thought I’d talk about the lovely intermingling of books, travel, and blogs. It’s not just BEA that you can explore through blogs, it’s anywhere in the world. For me, today, it’s Bath in England.
According to Rick Steves’ website, the best place to recover from jet lag in England is Bath — fly to Heathrow and immediately take a bus or train to Bath. So, that’s my plan for our trip. But then, I needed to start thinking about books and travel in and around Bath. Fortunately, these things just pop up here at British Isles Friday.
Jackie of Junk Boat Travels posted photos of Bath and a link to details about her day there, including the literary associations with Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. When I mentioned in comments our intention to stay in Bath, she also directed me to this recent restaurant and hotel review: The Pig near Bath.
Meanwhile, FictionFan reviewed Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, reminding me how fun that book is and that much of the action happens in Bath.
I’ll almost certainly want to take a coach tour to Stonehenge while we’re in Bath. Hopefully, we’ll have better weather than Suey of It’s All About Books did on the day she shot this video.
A possible day trip from Bath is Bristol. Carole’s Chatter provided photos — that suspension bridge might be enough to draw us to Bristol.
What books would you read while planning a trip to Bath? What would you want to see when you got there?
