Armchair BEA — Novellas and short stories
Today’s reading-themed post at Armchair BEA is about novellas and short stories. I’ve never been much of a fan of the short form — I prefer a novel that I can sink into for awhile. But, it was short stories that got me to read e-books, a big turning point!
Suzanne Brockmann published several stories featuring characters from her Troubleshooters, Inc. series as short e-books: When Tony Met Adam, Beginnings and Ends, and Headed for Trouble. I loaded them on my phone and discovered that I could, indeed, read e-books if they were short and fun! At about the same time, she published a short piece to introduce a new futuristic world that I really loved: Shane’s Last Stand.
By the time I finished those short books, I was hooked on the idea of always having something fun to read on my phone. I still struggle with e-books that are very long, but I’m okay with normal novel-length books on my phone now. A fun story and an exciting world that I want to visit again and again are a must if I’m going to keep reading an e-book.
Do you read short fiction?
I like short stories that are in a larger universe, like the ones you mentioned, or that are sort of creepy! I think creepy stories are great as shorter tales.

Alas, I do not read short fiction. I used to when I was in school because i found short stories to be nice manageable bite sized pieces, but now i find them to be too short! I love to immerse myself in another world and sometimes that takes a novel!
Most of the short stories or novellas I read are from longer series that I’m already invested in. If they are in an anthology with other authors I’ve found it a good way to get to know them and their writing style
I am not a huge fan of short stories. I love devouring books and they even feel short sometimes even though they are not. With a short story, I think I will just be left with wanting more.
But then again, I haven’t really read many short stories, so I might be wrong.
I do think I will read a couple novellas in the future, but ones that are set in the universe of book series that I am already reading.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I generally keep clear of novellas, but I must read Shane’s Last Stand and SB’s other novellas.
I bought The Best American Short Stories of for several years but not recently. I might go get this year’s edition, on kindle which is how I read everything.
I have quite a few on my Kindle, but I always seem to forget about them! I tend to read compilations if anything.
