Armchair BEA — Author Interaction
Today’s second Armchair BEA topic is Author Interaction. (The first topic was “more than words,” which I addressed as my regular Tuesday Readers’ Workouts post.)
My favorite author interaction since I’ve been blogging was with Karen Karbo when she was ramping up her publicity for Julia Child Rules last year. Her publicist contacted me after I tweeted at Karen Karbo with links to reviews of two earlier books in the Kick Ass Women series: How Georgia Became O’Keeffe and The Gospel According to Coco Chanel.
Karen and her publicist had a great idea for Julia Child Rules — ask bloggers to choose a rule and apply it for a week. That experience gave me new blogging friends as well as a terrific week of Rule Number 6: To Be Happy, Work Hard. I linked to my whole week’s posts in my review: Julia Child Rules. Karen made a Pinterest board of all of our posts.
The week after my review, Karen made time to do a Q&A on my blog, patiently answering my librarian question about research, among others.
All told, that was several weeks of interaction with Karen, her publicist, and the cadre of bloggers that participated in the Live Like Julia event. I’m still interacting with some of those people! All of it felt like the natural, normal, way that people connect on the internet — bridging distances with shared passions and community.
I also read How to Hepburn in December, so I completed the entire Kick Ass Women series (so far) in 2013. What a great way to explore the concept of what it means to be a woman in the 21st century.
What is your best memory of an author interaction, online or in person?
Great story and an even better experience. I love it when things come together like that I wrote about two of my favorite “author moments” today. It was a lot of revisiting those memories, too.
Ok, I totally owe you because that Julia Child book will be a perfect birthday gift for one of my friends. Awesome! Thanks for doing my gift research for me
You’re welcome! It’s a terrific gift book.
That is so awesome. I’d be completely excited to have that much interaction with an author that I love.
That’s so lucky! I’ve never interacted with an author on that kind of level! Most of my author interactions include crying and groveling, haha
Such a great story! I love when authors and publicists find creative ways promote a book!
Thanks for tuning me into the series and thanks for showing me the good stuff that comes from some tweeting. I’ve been slow on twitter lately. This inspires me to ramp it up!
I had never heard of these books before, but oh my wow, I must have. Julia? Audrey? Coco? Anything that draws inspiration from these dynamo women has got my attention. These books sound amazing…thank you so much for sharing!
That sounds like such a fun experience! I try to promote specific authors whose books I’ve loved, but I’ve never really gotten into one book or one author like this. I’d like to though
What a super fun author interaction!! And Julie Child Rules sounds like the coolest idea ever actually! I’ve not felt up to having an author on my blog yet so hearing your experience on that is incredibly helpful too!!
Nice to cross paths with you here at A-BEA my Sunday Salon buddy!
