Readers’ Workouts — February 18
Welcome to Readers’ Workouts, the weekly event where book lovers share workout stories, goals, successes, and challenges.
Poor weather and Saturday’s fall on the ice has me slightly behind schedule for my exercise this month. Working out, I think, helped me fall more gracefully with less injury than I would have managed without it. My daily exercise streak also gave me good instincts — rather than sit still and let everything stiffen up, I did lots of stretching. My wrist is a little swollen but no more pain and my bum feels about the same as after doing a lot of squats.
Do you find that exercise helps your body handle stresses better?

I’m so sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you are feeling better soon. I hate to fall at my age, but in the last year or two I’ve had a few falls, but not because of ice or snow, just not paying enough attention to what I was doing.
I fell on the ice last week, thanks in large part to Holly. No pain afterwards, however, and, like you, I suspect that my exercising helped me to fall more gracefully although, at the time, I felt pretty darn clumsy.
Hope you’re feeling better after your fall! That can definitely derail you.
I had a chance to go for an hour of snowshoeing in the country yesterday, which was a lot of fun and made for a great workout! My hip flexors are very sore from it today, though, so I really felt it during my aerobics/toning class at lunch.
Oh no, hope you’re healed up soon! I do feel that good physical shape helps you deal with physical stressed better…best example I have is pregnancy…I feel like being in shape and working out throughout my pregnancies really helped me bounce back from labor a lot quicker. It’s no fun to work out when you’re carrying an 8 lb beach ball in your stomach, but there are long-term advantages!
I’ve continued my running for the last couple weeks, and have managed to hit a sub-10-minute-mile pace on my 2 mile runs. Now have to work on extending my mileage. I also started doing 30 Day Shred last week…oooooh Jillian Michaels, how I detest you…but I know it will be helpful for my arms especially!
