Read Along: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin…and Giveaway!
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! And happy winter holiday to everyone! Here’s a giveaway and a Read Along for some cozy comfort today.
As a Read Along book to go with the New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge, I took Vasilly’s suggestion of The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. It’s a book I’ve already read, but want to read again which makes it just perfect for a Read Along book.
For a bonus, any one who signs up for this year’s Read Along will be registered to win a free paperback copy of our Read Along book from last year: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. This was a great book for starting off the new year with thoughts about how to make small changes for big results over the long haul. We discussed it in three parts in January 2013:

Register for this year’s Read Along of The Happiness Project in order to be entered in the drawing for last year’s Read Along book, The Power of Habit.
The Power of Habit is coming out in paperback on January 7, but I have an advance copy provided by the publisher to send to our winner next week. Sign up for this year’s Read Along, either in the comments or through the link list, before 7pm CST on January 1, 2014 to be entered in the drawing. I’ll announce the winner at our Twitter chat that night.
The Happiness Project is a completely different take on how to live a good life, but it incorporates some of the same things we learned in The Power of Habit for building structures that make it easier to do the things we want with our days.

The Happiness Project is the Read Along book for The New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge of 2014
Here’s our schedule for reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin:
Sign-up on this post starting now, either with a comment or link up a post on your blog. Make sure to put your email in the comment or link form so that I can advise you if you won the copy of The Power of Habit and so I can send you advance discussion questions for The Happiness Project.
Week 1. Read the first quarter of the book on Vitality, Marriage, and Work. Discussion questions will be emailed on Saturday, January 4. A link list for your posts will be available on Wednesday, January 8.
Week 2. Read the second quarter of the book on Parenthood, Leisure, and Friendship. Discussion questions will be emailed on Saturday, January 11. A link list for your posts will be available on Wednesday, January 15.
Week 3. Read the third quarter of the book on Money, Eternity, and Books. Discussion questions will be emailed on Saturday, January 18. A link list for your posts will be available on Wednesday, January 22.
Week 4. Read the final quarter of the book on Mindfulness, Attitude, and Happiness. Discussion questions will be emailed on Saturday, January 25. A link list for your posts will be available on Wednesday, January 29.
You don’t have to participate in the New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge in order to play along with our Read Along. You also don’t need a blog — we can discuss the book in comments, in our Facebook group, or in our Twitter chats on Wednesday evenings.
If you are participating in New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge, you may count The Happiness Project as one of your books — I am!

Count me in! I’ve already started to reread The Happiness Project. I think my favorite chapter is March about work.
Hello, I am Opong from Indonesia. I work for National Library of Indonesia. I am really interested to join your program, so I would like have one or more books which you over, if you do not mind. I wish I could follow what you have program then.
Sincerely yours
Opong
Thanks for the invitation, Joy. This sounds like an interesting idea, but I won’t have time to read The Happiness Project – in fact, I’m taking it off my list. I don’t actually read much non-fiction, other than memoir. But I think I’ll drop by from time-to-time to read the discussion which, knowing you, will likely be even more interesting than the book.

Hi Joy! I just saw your note to me about this discussion over on Goodreads. I was taking a little technology vacation during Christmas time… I’m bummed that I didn’t see this message until now! While I won’t be able to finish my current book, buy this new one, and start it before 1/4, I am looking forward to hearing your review! Do you do these read-a-long’s regularly? I’d love to take part in the future!
The Read Along is going all month if you want to join in later! I usually do a Read Along in January and another in August / September in conjunction with the Back to School Reading Challenge.
Joy, I’m going to try this. The Happiness Project sounds like something I should read, and the other book I’ll commit to is one I bought a while back but haven’t gotten to—Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life by Dani Shapiro. I will also share the reading challenge on my blog and will do my best to keep up with the posts there (gives focus to the blog when I was floundering around, trying to figure out what to do in January). So: committed I am. I hope. Thanks!
You convinced me, I’m in!
I started reading this last year, a library copy and loved it so much that I stopped and got my own copy that I could make notes on. And then I never got around to it.

I would like to join in the read-along of The Happiness Project. I read it from the library and can’t remember if I bought a used copy somewhere along the line since then or not, but I would like to re-read it with the group. I’m trying to limit my challenge sign-ups, so am not going to sign up for the New Year’s Resolution Challenge, although that sounds like fun, too!
