Sunday Salon — December 8
Time: // 8:38 am
The scene: // There’s snow on the ground! Accumulating snow is a bit unusual for December in Missouri. Areas south of us got 10 inches or more. We got just a couple, but it’s not going away for a few days because we got a cold snap at the same time.
Listening to: // Gospel Christmas on Accuradio.
Reading: // The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. The library wants it back now and I’m not quite half-way through. Oops. I’m thinking about reading all day.
Blogging about: //
Two book reviews this week:
- Provence, 1970 by Luke Barr. Culinary leaders M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, and James Beard spend a month or so in France while considering American cuisine. And eating, of course.
- Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America by Lerone Bennett, Jr. Our most recent selection for the diversity book club deepened and broadened our sense of American History. The news about Nelson Mandela’s death broke just before our meeting, so our gathering felt like a way to honor a man whose life demonstrated the long arc of the moral universe bending towards justice.
Another night, I went to Garden Glow, the Christmas light show at the Missouri Botanical Garden. I posted conventional photos the next day, saving my experimental work for Saturday to display with the Saturday Snapshot link-up. Check it out for a description of a technique to paint with light to create festive photos for the holiday season.
Looking forward to: // Announcing the second annual New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge. If you can’t wait, read last year’s announcement — I’ll set it up in a similar way. Does anyone have a suggestion for a Read-Along book? Something that helps with goals or resolutions or project completion? Last year, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg put us in the right frame of mind.
What are you up to this fine Sunday?
Yesterday, there was a promotion for the book on amazon, $6.99 plus shipping. I don’t know if the promotion is still on, as I bought the kindle version for over $7. The book print ink is rather light, I found, so I can read it better on the ereader.

If you are this committed to this book, I need to add it to my list of requests. Thanks for sharing it.
Here’s my Sunday Salon post.
I started The Signature of All Things on audio this week and am surprised at how much I’m enjoying it (disliked Eat, Pray, Love). Juliet Stevenson is a favorite narrator and I’m even considering a print copy to make it a read/listen combo. Hope you get your wish to read all day!
I’m reading Sunday Salon posts, listening to music, and probably a bit of napping. I’ll probably give a listen to your Gospel Christmas too.
I’m curious about the Elizabeth Gilbert book…I was not a fan of Eat, Pray, Love, but I’ve heard this one is better.
Enjoy your week…and here’s MY WEEKLY SUNDAY/MONDAY UPDATES
The Signature of All Things is on my tbr list. Reading is definitely a good way to spend the day.
I’m looking forward to your New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge too !
We have nothing more than dusting of snow here, but I’ll take it
I love the idea of a New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge. I look forward to reading the “official” post.
Have a warm, joy-filled week!
We have snow too, although not a lot. Cold though… I had the same problem with a library book recently, it was due and I wasn’t even halfway through yet. Sigh. I had to take it back though cause I was sidetracked by a different book… another day.
Nice photos of the Garden Glow, looks like a fun event.
It hasn’t snowed here yet. Every year winter starts later and later. Even when it does snow it doesn’t get that cold any more.
Checked out the New Year’s Resolution Reading post from last year — I love that idea! I had a reading resolution for all of 2013 but I’m coming up way short; sticking with a month-long resolution sounds more my style.
Joy, I just thought of Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project as a potential NYR read-along pick.
