Back to School Reading Challenge and Wednesday Book Club
Welcome to the Back to School Reading Challenge and Wednesday Book Club! We’re reading books to learn new things.
You’re welcome to join us! The challenge runs until September 30 so there’s still time to participate.
We had four book reviews last week.
Maphead’s Book Blog brought us two reviews that explore Eastern Europe:
Harvee, the Book Dilettante, learned about the Louisiana bayou country when a favorite fictional Private Investigator and his dog journeyed there: Book Review: The Sound and the Furry by Spencer Quinn.
Melissa of Melos bookshelf studied the Appalachian Trail through the eyes of a young women writing a memoir: Becoming Odyssa- Jennifer Davis.
My Update and our Read Along
I started the last of the eight books I intended to read, Gluttony by Francine Prose. I’m currently somewhere in the middle of four of the books — I’m not sure I’ll finish them, much less review them, but we’ll see.
One of the books I finished was our Read Along selection: How Children Succeed by Paul Tough. There are discussion questions in each of these posts:
How Children Succeed by Paul Tough — A Back to School Read Along
How Children Succeed by Paul Tough — A Back to School Read Along, September 4
How Children Succeed by Paul Tough — A Back to School Read Along, September 11
Are you reading How Children Succeed? Discuss it on your blog and link to the post below, or I’d be happy to discuss it in the comments. I’m reading Clean by David Sheff and it seems to me that the same things that help children succeed also keep them off drugs.
Your Update
What are you reading and learning right now? Link up reviews and update posts below so we can all visit. Or, discuss in the comments.
Chat Tonight!
We can also chat about How Children Succeed and other things we’re learning from books on Twitter tonight. We’re meeting at 9 Eastern Time (8 Central, 7 Mountain, 6 Pacific). We’ll be using the hashtag #WSChat. WS stands for Wordsmith Studio, a group of writers learning together on the internet. They have graciously allowed us to take over a normal time slot that they use for book discussions to talk about what we’re reading for the Back to School Reading Challenge. Writing books may make an appearance in the discussion. Join us!
