Readers’ Workouts July 31
Welcome to the first Summer Olympics edition of Readers’ Workouts! Each Tuesday, bookish people share our exercise stories, tribulations, and triumphs.
Are you enjoying the Olympics? I loved the nod to literature in the Opening Ceremony — yay for Mary Poppins to the rescue! I watched all of the men’s and women’s road races. We’re thinking of going to London next year, so it was like taking a virtual bicycle tour of the area.
It’s the last day of July. I met my July goal to workout with my Wii 15 times. Yay! I’m rewarding myself with the Wii game Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics. I don’t know if it will help my exercise at all, but it sounds like another good way to get a virtual preview of London.
I only have to do 45 minutes of exercise today to meet my goal of 1400 minutes of exercise in July. I’m pretty sure I’ll make it because there are at least two more loads of compost in the truck to shovel into the handcart, haul over to my garden, and spread.
How was your week? What are your plans for the coming week? Are you watching the Olympics? Are they inspiring your exercise?

I thought the Opening Ceremony was fabulous. As a history teacher I loved how the change from an agrarian society to an industrial society was portrayed. I have to figure out a way to use it in my classroom, but I think it’s copyrighted.
Great job in hitting your goal. Look out August.
Great job at meeting your July goal.
I loved the Opening Ceremony especially the change from an agrarian society to an industrial society.
I’ve been watching the horses and the weightlifting. I like watching the obscure events like synchronized swimming too.
We watched the synchronized diving — I really expected to watch a couple of minutes before fast forwarding to something else, but we got all caught up in it!
I’m looking forward to synchronized swimming next week.
I love this idea, Joy! My workout goal is 3 1-hour gym sessions a week, with the option to swap out one of those sessions (or add on in addition to those sessions) with a drop-in dance class.
Welcome! Those are terrific goals — I like having a back up plan like a workout to swap in if something else isn’t working for me that day.
I haven’t been as interested in the Olympics since I was a kid until now, for some reason. The gymnastics is incredible!
Great job on definitely making your goal today, Joy!!
Congratulations on meeting your goal Joy!
I haven’t watched any of the Olympics but it definitely does get one motivated to exercise just a little bit harder. After my milestone run yesterday I called myself an Olympian in my own mind 🙂
Wouldn’t a trip to London be fabulous! To run the marathon course, the bike race, anything… I’m watching water rafting right now… that would be fun to try too.
I will finish my third month in a row with 200+ miles… running/jogging/walking. With my hip injury I have come to terms with ‘as long as I’m out there, who cares if I’m walking or running’.
Congratulations for meeting your July goal!
200+ miles a month, done consistently, is definitely a great way to stay in shape. I’m so glad that you’ve found something that’s working for you.
Yay for the Olympic spirit! Well done and hope you enjoy your new Wii Fit game. I’d love a Wii fit but with no room I’d probably end up punching the TV by accident.
I’ve been watching the fencing, archery and admiring the male gymnasts…… bronze medal of course.
