It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?
My week of weed, workouts, winning, and weekend cooking:
Slim in 6. My weekly exercise Checkpoint featured a review of the exercise video series Slim in 6 by Debbie Siebers.
Wondrous Words Wednesday. I revealed what librarians mean when we say the word “weed.”
Winner of my Black History Month Giveaway. It was Alex W of Is It Amazing?
Book Review: No-Fad Diet by American Heart Association. My Weekend Cooking post for Valentine’s Day weekend featured a book focused on healthy hearts and a recipe we liked for braised red cabbage.
Read
American Terroir by Rowan Jacobsen describes carefully produced foods of North America in a series of wonderfully descriptive essays. I’ll post more about this book soon.
I finished and enjoyed An Appetite for Murder by Lucy Burdette, the start of a mystery series featuring a food writer in Key West. This book was a great way to vicariously accompany a friend who is spending this month there. I was in Key West for half a day during a cruise and dream of getting there again.
Reading
I got sidetracked from You on a Diet by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz and The Philosopher’s Diet by Richard Watson (which I may have lost track of physically, too — not good since it’s a library book!). Instead of those, I’m focusing on Strong Women, Strong Hearts by Miriam E. Nelson and Alice H. Lichtenstein. If I get it finished, I’ll include a review in my exercise checkpoint post tomorrow. With the heart theme, it seemed like a good choice for a Valentine’s Day post.
I’m really enjoying Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes, the book for African American Read-In that is being hosted Vasilly (1330V), Doret (The Happy Nappy Bookseller) and Edi (CrazyQuiltEdi). There’s still plenty of time to pick up a copy and join us — the discussion starts next week. The magical realism element is working really well for me — especially since we all know what’s going to happen in this story. It’s like the reader shares in some of Mama Ya-Ya’s visions. The cover makes me smile.
I tried both A Year in the Village of Eternity by Tracey Lawson and Farm City by Novella Carpenter but neither appealed to me at the moment. So, my lunchtime reading is the book that I need to read anyway for our next Diversity Book Club meeting: Unbowed by Wangari Maathai, a memoir by the Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner.
That’s plenty of books to be reading at one time, but I also started Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann because I needed a paperback that I owned to read in my brother’s hot tub which I used when I went over to feed his dog on Saturday.
Will Read
There’s little chance that I’m going to finish all of those books this week, so I haven’t figured out what’s next on my reading agenda.
What are you reading this week?
