S is for Steam Engines #AtoZChallenge

I’m doing the A to Z Challenge in April, using the theme of the UK & Ireland. S is for Steam.

I’ve wanted to go to England since I was old enough to read Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. My husband never shared that interest, so I looked for things we could both enjoy during our trip in 2014. That meant lots of focus on the Age of Steam and the Industrial Revolution. Here are all the posts (so far — I’m currently reading a book about the steam engines at Crofton Pumping Station) ordered in a way to introduce steam:

Ah, I do have a love for steam engines and locomotives, something that seems to have followed me from being a child, and my son has picked up the same habit. Fascinating things.

We went with school on a holiday to Barry Island, Wales, when I was about 10 years old and were taken on an excursion to a steam museum. That included fairground engines as well as locomotives. Not far from where I live now there’s a steam railway museum at Loughborough and here in Nottingham there’s an Industrial Museum at Wollaton Hall with an engine exhibited and they host events where you can see it in operation. I’ll look at your links when I have more time, just flying through today. hope you’re having a nice weekend and best wishes for the last few days of the challenge

My father-in-law is a big lover of steam engines and he regularly goes away for the weekend to steam engine rallies to take photographs of them. When I was younger I visited the station in Goathland, Yorkshire where they filmed a popular country drama called Heartbeat and they also filmed a lot of shots of the Hogwarts Express there for Harry Potter.
