Compassion for Trump Supporters #CompassionateSunday — 8 Comments

  1. Your friend Keith makes a valid point, I think. I also believe that you are making progress, as evidenced by this post. Your post did help some, but I’ve got a long way to go, I must admit. Sometimes I just have to turn off the news, not that I want to ignore what’s going on, but because it can be so depressing.

  2. You make some excellent points. I do worry about these folks. One of my problems is that I only know one Trump supporter IRL, and he is not part of this demographic at all. He’s a well-off biracial computer engineer in California (who, when we were in high school, though Iwas silly for being religious), and he’s also a 9-11 truther and all-around conspiracy theorist type. He’s for Trump because he sees Trump as an outsider; everybody hates him, therefore he likes him. I think this is terrible reasoning. However, not all Trump supporters can be like that!

  3. You certainly are taking a compassionate approach in trying to understand those who are Trump followers. I shudder realizing how many there are, but had not tried looking at their rationale from such an understanding way.

  4. “How can we . . . make our points in ways that are more likely to be heard? I’m going to guess that compassion is at the root of the answer.”

Wow! I had never thought of it this way. I need to consider Facebook posts from “angry white men” from this point of view and see if I can do a better job of making my point. I plan to print out this post (with the comments so far) to take to our discussion on compassion in an hour. Thank you, Joy!

  5. This presidential race is getting crazy at times. The passion people feel is amazing on both sides of the ticket and within the parties themselves. Keith Rose makes a good point. And I believe if everyone practiced compassion, maybe the violence would die down.

    Good post! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Thanks for this insightful post. You are willing to look at Trump supporters rationally. Unfortunately it does not address the Christian haters. And by that, I mean the people that, under the flag of Christianity, spout hatred against people they view as outsiders. If it were just a matter of building a wall, I’d just sigh and say we differ on that point. But the hatred that Trump inspires! I have a hard time being compassionate towards those people. And I know I should have the most compassion for the haters. They must be terribly unhappy people.
