Readers’ Workouts
Welcome to Readers’ Workouts, our weekly gathering of bookish folks doing active things. How was exercise for you in the past week? What are your plans for the coming week? Link your post below (feel free to grab the logo — or use last week’s if you like bolder colors: Readers’ Workouts — November 27) or tell your story in the comments. Don’t forget to visit the links to offer encouragement and support to other participants!
I met my goal to do the 30 Day Shred workout by Jillian Michaels fifteen times in November. For my reward, I promised myself 5-pound dumb bells. Here’s how little I know about strength training — I had it in my head that you couldn’t buy 4-pound weights so I would have to jump from 3 to 5. So, I got to Sports Authority and discovered the 4-pound dumb bells sitting right there between the 3-pound and the 5-pound.
Given my great success so far at the cautious and gradual approach (no injuries! knock on wood!), I had to go with the 4-pound dumb bells. But I went ahead and bought the 5-pound ones, too, because it won’t be too long before I’ll be able to use them.
I’ve done one workout at Level 1 and one at Level 2 with the new weights. I have no problem doing all reps of curls and rows, but with presses and raises, I have to go back to 3-pounds for the second set.
How is your exercise going?
Great reward! I need to be better about giving myself rewards!
It does seem weird that you can get 4 lb weights. I had a set of those because when I went to get some they were all out of 5s. After that though you have to jump by 5lbs. Maybe they let you ease into it..
You’re doing great on the 30 Day Shred! I’ve worked out to the tape before but only made it to day 3.
I will try again after finals. Right now instead of working out, I’m trying to eat right.
I need to give myself rewards too! I haven’t tried the 30 Day Shred, I’ll have to check it out!
Way to go, Joy!
Only 334 minutes for me last week. Kind of low for me because I didn’t bike on the weekend and that’s usually my biggest workout–1.5-2.5 hrs. My cycling partner couldn’t ride and I didn’t feel like going by myself.
Last week I spent an hour at the gym five days in fitness classes–kickbox class, step, spin, TRX, circuit cardio; a 34 minute run one day and a day off on the seventh day. Hey, worked for the Big Guy, right? hahaha
Goodness, I did one workout with a friend on this video and truly is a workout! It definitely works.
I like the idea of increasing the weights, Joy. I’m going to get a 5 pound set, too (or a 4 pound one – or both, like you!). There’s too much jumping in L3 for me, so it will help me increase the difficulty of L1 and L2.
Joy, congrats! I wanted to feature your 30 day shred post from the link up last week. Loved it. Would also love for you to link in again on Wed.
Great job, Joy! I’m feeling pretty good this week, so I’m going to try to get in a couple of extra 30-Day Shred sessions. Had yoga yesterday and it was great but hard, too. Felt like an accomplishment!
I know last week I said something about posting something over the weekend but I didn’t and I only got around to it today. I meant to write something yesterday but I was babysitting so don’t be surprised if next week I manage to post something on Tuesday.
As you know, I have a date with Jillian Michaels (her dvds anyway) in January. In the meantime, I’m using Mark Lauren’s book which I plan on reviewing week by week as I progress through the plan. So far I’m doing well. No real problems in spite of my age, vertigo, and knees.
That is pretty fantastic that your reward is not a sweet treat (that would be my reward!), but rather dumb-bells! Way to go, that is inspiring!
I’ve never heard of the 30-Day Shred. I’ll have to check it out at some point. I’ve been doing the Couch-to-5K training and tracking my progress on my weekly posts, like this one here: http://www.writersfunzone.com/blog/2012/11/30/healthy-writers-club-restarting-after-thanksgiving/.
So glad other bookish types are making time to work out, too!
Thank goodness daily workouts are one habit I DO have in place because pretty much every other discipline falls by the way side! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Yours looks so interesting. I’m so glad I followed the links here. I look forward to reading again!
I’m seriously considering jumping in on your Readers’ Workouts Joy
I figure if I comment on this post I’ll almost HAVE to join in next week, lol.
